چکیده

A feedback vertex set of a graph is a subset of vertices that contains at least one vertex from every cycle in the graph. We show that a feedback vertex set approximating a minimum one within a constant factor can be e ciently found in undirected graphs. In fact the derived approximation ratio matches the best constant ratio known today for the vertex cover problem, improving the previous best results for both weighted and unweighted cases. The existence of an approximation preserving reduction of the vertex cover problem to the feedback vertex set problem suggests that further improvement of the obtained ratio will require entirely new ideas. We extend our approach to handle graphs of bounded vertex degree, and show that it achieves even better performance, 2 2 3 2 , where is the maximum degree of graphs. These approximation bounds are obtained by using a non{trivial generalization of the classical local ratio principle of Bar{Yehuda and Even.

Constant Ratio Approximations of the Weighted Feedback Vertex Set Problem for Undirected Graphs

We consider the weighted feedback vertex set problem for undirected graphs. It is shown that a generalized local ratio strategy leads to an e cient approximation with the performance guarantee of twice the optimal, improving the previous results for both weighted and unweighted cases. We further elaborate our approach to treat the case when graphs are of bounded degree, and show that it achieve...

Constant Factor Approximation for Subset Feedback Set Problems via a new LP relaxation

We consider subset feedback edge and vertex set problems in undirected graphs. The input to these problems is an undirected graph G = (V,E) and a set S = {s1, s2, . . . , sk} ⊂ V of k terminals. A cycle in G is interesting if it contains a terminal. In the Subset Feedback Edge Set problem (SubsetFES) the input graph is edge-weighted and the goal is to remove a minimum weight set of edges such t...

Approximation Algorithms for the Feedback Vertex Set Problem with Applications to Constraint Satisfaction and Bayesian Inference

A feedback vertex set of an undirected graph is a subset of vertices that intersects with the vertex set of each cycle in the graph. Given an undirected graph G with n vertices and weights on its vertices, polynomial-time algorithms are provided for approximating the problem of finding a feedback vertex set of G with smallest weight. When the weights of all vertices in G are equal, the performa...
